Strawberry Kisses (Rocky Harbor, Book 2)

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Rachel Riley, Graham’s younger sister, is back in Rocky Harbor after being rescued from her abusive ex-boyfriend in California. She is home and safe now, but she is not back to herself at all. The only place that she seems to have found solace is in the comfort of the kitchen, where she is a fantastic chef. Lucy, their younger sister, decides to try to help Rachel find her strength again by signing them up to take a self-defense class.

The class happens to be taught by the bad boy turned good, Jake Morgan. Jake has a sordid past, but he has turned his life around, and teaching the class is part of his way of giving back. He takes a particular interest in Rachel, in a way that he has never done with a student before. The attraction is mutual, and they find themselves falling in love. When a huge part of their pasts collide, will their love be enough to see them through or will it all fall apart?

This is the second book in the Rocky Harbor series (the first was Staying Grounded, which you’ll remember- I LOVED!), and it was just as delectable as the first! The groundwork for Rachel’s character was laid in the Staying Grounded, as it was mentioned that she has been in an abusive relationship, but she continued to be built in to a character that you can’t help but fall in love with. Jake’s character was phenomenally well developed, and turned in to the ultimate book boyfriend. This story kept me just as engaged as the first, and I wanted to read it in one sitting (it ultimately took two). I highly recommend this book and series.

Excerpt:

“Max,” she warned. Her stomach growled and she giggled. “We need food. I’m not great in the kitchen but I can help.”

“You can sit on the counter naked and be my inspiration.” He kissed the tip of her perky nose and climbed out of bed, rummaging through his drawers for a pair of shorts and a clean shirt.

“That doesn’t sound very sanitary.”

“Sounds freaking sexy to me.” He winked at her from the doorway and headed to the kitchen with a shit-eating grin on his face.

She is sure that there is a cover-up involved, and that he is to blame for her Grandpop’s death. Will their newfound romance be able to survive this hurdle?

Much like the previous book that I reviewed for you guys, this was another wonderful outing from Marianne Rice! For such a short story, the characters were all given great depth and personality and the story was well rounded. It had a great romance, of course, but there was a wonderful sub-plot to go along with it. I swear, this author is going to turn me in to a romance reader, yet!

This is part of the Dallas Fire & Rescue Kindle World, and it released today, so go get it!

Staying Grounded (Rocky Harbor, Book 1)

Series: Rocky Harbor

Pages: 228

Graham Riley is a pilot who loves his wings and his freedom. He has no desire to be tied down to any place or anyone. He has worked hard his entire adult life to overcome the stigma of his youth, being the son of a murderer. He was adopted and raised by a loving couple who taught him to be a responsible and respectable man. This is how he has always been viewed until he makes a split-second decision to defend someone, and his past is dredged up to smear his name.

Maggie O’Fallon grew up in a home where she was virtually ignored by her parents, and her father was never able to be depended upon to be around. Her mother stuck with him anyway, but was heartbroken and a mess every time that he left. That is the last thing that Maggie want for her own life. She wants a stable relationship, with a man that she can depend on to be home every night.

Graham and Maggie are brought together by the events stemming from Graham’s altercation. Maggie is to be Graham’s therapist, but there may be more between them. They both feel the chemistry, but they are exactly the opposite of what they each thought that they wanted. How will this ever work, or will it?

After a series of stops and starts, it looks like the relationship (or whatever it was that they had) is over for good, that is until a PI turns up with photos of the two of them together. This could destroy Maggie’s career. Does Graham care about her enough to put her ahead of himself. Will she even care if he does?

I am not typically one for a straight romance, but once I began this book I could not put it down! The story pulled me in and would not let go. The character building and development were very well done, and not just for the central characters. The secondary characters were all well fleshed out, as well. I found myself laughing out loud at parts of the story, and I was totally engaged all the way through. I very much recommend this, even if you aren’t typically a romance reader. It is really just a great story, and I look forward to reading more in this series.

Diem Keegan owns Cupcake Diem, which she runs with her awesome assistant Reese. She has landed a dream client, with the wedding of the year, runway model Lili Crew. Lili and Diem were best friends in school, until Lili was discovered and dropped Diem. As high profile clients can sometimes be, Lili is demanding, and quite a handful. After a meeting at a high end hotel ends badly, Diem stops in at the hotel bar for a drink and some complaining about her client. The friendly bartender, however, turns out to be Sterling Crew: Lili’s brother, and the biggest developer in the city. Will this encounter end Diem’s dream wedding account, or will it land her more than she ever dreamed?

This was USA Today Bestselling author, Jamie Lee Scott’s, first endeavor in to the world of romance writing, and I think that she made the transition beautifully. The characters in this novella were just as well developed as those in her Gotcha Detective Agency series, and the writing was just as lovely. The story was engaging and attention grabbing, even for this reader, who doesn’t usually read romance. If you are a fan of romance, I think that this novella is a great story to dive in to.

Eleanor & Park

Genre: YA/Contemporary Romance

Publisher: St. Martin’s

Pages: 336

Eleanor- the new girl at school- comes from a dysfunctional (to say the least) family, and is bullied because she dresses weird, has wild red hair, and is a little overweight. Park- who has grown up in this same neighborhood his whole life- is half Korean/half Irish, comes from a good home, but is still a bit of an outcast because he loves alternative music and comic books. Park reluctantly lets Eleanor sit by him on the bus on her first day of school. From there, they begin to silently bond, as ark realizes that she is discreetly reading his comic books with him. That bond slowly grows in to first love throughout the school year. It’s difficult because of Eleanor’s home situation, but the make it work- until her home life erupts one fateful night.

Eleanor & Park is a story that reminds you of how it feels to find your first love. It’s a little awkward, and you really have no idea what you’re doing, but it’s sweet. It’s also a story that reminds you of how mean kids can be, especially when they have no idea of what someone is really going through. Never fear, those mean kids have a little redemption in there, too! It’s a bit of a coming of age story of these kids, in the mid 80’s, when it was even harder to know what to do in a bad situation and of how they came together to figure things out. It’s sweet, funny, and a little heartbreaking all at once. It was a really good book, and I really enjoyed it.
