FiLwNE Conference

Hi all!!

I’ve made it to the Fall in Love with New England Conference, and have been hanging with author Jordan K. Rose for a couple of days!! I’ve met some new authors, and they seem interesting. I’m at the first panel now: Paranormals & Those Who Love Them. It looks to be a great panel!

Suicide Squad #1- Kicked in the Teeth (The New 52)

It’s been a while since I delved in to any graphic novels, but I’ve been pretty sick this last week & it’s been a rough work week. Some time with my Suicide Squad friends was just what I needed! I’m enjoying the New 52 series quite a bit. It’s different than the oldie but goodies, but they are fun! I’ve finished #2, and am going to start on The Batman Detective series while I’m waiting on Amazon to bring me 3 & 4. If you’re a graphic novel fan, give them a shot!

Penny Dread Tales Vol. 1: Gears, Coils, Aether & Steam

Edited by: Christopher Ficco

Genre: Steampunk/Sci-Fi

Publisher: RuneWright LLC

Pages: 390

Penny Dread Tales is a nod to the 19th and early 20th Century publication format known as Penny Dreadful, which is what this wonderful Steampunk short story anthology is dedicated to. In the vein of Jules Verne and Mary Shelley, these wonderfully written and beautifully imagined stories will make your mind wander to its far reaches, and really contemplate “what might have been” or “what could be”. At the time of its publication, many of the authors whom contributed to this anthology were publishing for the first time. This is a fact that was not lost on me, but one that I never would have gleaned from their brilliant writing, had I not known this ahead of time. I know that it will come as no surprise to any of you, my dear readers, that my favorite story of the anthology came at the hands of the one and only Quincy J. Allen- Lasater’s Lucky Left. It was engaging and brilliant, with amazingly fleshed out characters, as always. There are many, many amazing stories in this anthology, but if I had to pick a second favorite, I think that would be Iron Angel by Cayleigh Hickey. If you have any interest at all in Steampunk, I think that you would really enjoy this anthology!

Missing Reviews

Hello!

Ok, so I’ve had some computer problems in the last little bit. After looking at the blog, I’ve realized that there is at least one, and possibly more reviews that were “posted”, but apparently didn’t actually post. I’ll be re-posting them, but it may take me just a little bit to see if there are more that are missing. Ugh, technology! 🙂

Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg

notorious-rbg-cover

Author: Irin Carmon

Genre: Biography/Memoir

Publisher: Dey Street Books

Pages: 240

First takeaway from this book: RBG is a badass! She is feminism done right. She was a pioneer in pushing for equality, and is still doing so from the highest court in our country, and I love her for that. She is the embodiment of the Shakespearian quote “Though she be but little, she is fierce”. She is a tough woman, but this book allowed me to see her softer side, which was lovely.

I really enjoyed this book. It is a very millennial take on a biography/memoir and not something that I would recommend using if you were looking for something to use for a research project. If, however, you are looking for a fun read that will give you a glimpse in to the life of one of the most influential women of our time, this is a good place to look. I will say that the writing style/layout of the book was a bit disjointed, or “clunky”, for lack of a better term. It jumps around throughout the timeline of her life and career a lot, and it is easy to lose exactly where you are in her life or career if you aren’t paying attention to what you are reading. Aside from that, the book is a lot of fun, and has some great humor and heartwarming parts in it. The additional material (pictures, annotated dissents, documents, etc) jut make it all the more enjoyable. It’s definitely a worthy read. I have long admired this remarkable woman, and this just made me admire her all the more.

Costume Thoughts??!!

Hey guys!!

So, I’m going to a book con next month, and I just found out that I need a costume. It’s halfway across the country from me, so I need something easy to lack in my suitcase to fly. I, also, haven’t dressed up in years! My first thought is Annabeth from Percy Jackson. What do you guys think?!

We Remember….

Today, we in America remember the most horrific act of terror that our country has seen. On 9/11/01 our country was attacked, and we lost over 3,000 lives. Many of us can tell you exactly where we were when that first plane hit. I certainly can. I had just gotten out of the shower, and was getting ready for my first class of the day, as it was the first semester if my sophomore year of college. My roommate called me in to our living room, & we held hands as we cried & watched the news. Our world has changed a lot in the last 15 years. I’ve had many, many friends who have gone to war in response to this event. Many of them have come back hurt in one way or another, some physically, others emotionally- all have been changed forever. I am thankful to be able to say that they all came home. I am one of the lucky ones. My hope is this: We remember this day, and work towards a time that this will no longer be a threat. Learn to love one another, understand one another, respect one another, & embrace our differences. Much love to you all.
